Yesterday, I blogged about the 7 of Cups in terms of Narcissism over at the Thematic Tarot blog. An interesting conversation with Janet Boyer about the meaning of this card followed in the comments. All cards have light and shadow. I can't really see any card as just 'good' or 'bad.'
“I want women -- and men -- to feel empowered by a deeper and more psychotic part of themselves. The part they're always trying desperately to hide. I want that to become something that they cherish.”

The 7 of Cups is an extremely interesting card because it takes us deep within the Self to the part where we are forced to relinquish control and just go with the flow of the instinctive self. Some people live from this part of themselves (artists in particular) and are considered eccentric (or even insane) by more repressed people because of it.
Some people only come in contact with this part of themselves under the influence of drugs. Those who constantly repress this part of themselves in order to stay in control, such as the Narcissists of this world, only ever get to experience the rather terrifying Shadow aspect of this card which is all forms of toxic emotional manipulation.
In the Thoth Tarot, the title of this card is 'Debauch' and the card image shows clearly the rather low opinion Aleister Crowley held of this card.
|Thoth Tarot by Frieda Harris|
"This is one of the worst ideas that one can have; its mode is poison, its goal madness. It represents the delusion of Delirium Tremens and drug addiction; it represents the sinking into the mire of false pleasure. There is something almost suicidal in this card." - Aleister CrowleyMy guess is that Crowley's deep dislike for this card comes from his own tendency to overindulge and possibly by being manipulative. The hangover and karma that follow cannot be avoided.
A.E. Waite had a very different view of this card:
|Original Rider Waite Tarot by Pixie Smith|
"Strange chalices of vision, but the images are more especially those of the fantastic spirit. Divinatory Meanings: Fairy favours, images of reflection, sentiment, imagination, things seen in the glass of contemplation; some attainment in these degrees, but nothing permanent or substantial is suggested. Reversed: Desire, will, determination, project."
My own view of this card is that it is a portal to orgiastic, creative living. It's the fornication of the soul with the All That Is... We have to be willing to relinquish control and let Pan take us. The point is to let go and allow yourself to merge with the concupiscent desire to proliferate which pervades all of nature.
“When you make music or write or create, it's really your job to have mind-blowing, irresponsible, condomless sex with whatever idea it is you're writing about at the time. ”This is Venus in Scorpio and the sacred path of indulgence. Indulgence is sanctified when we embrace it and surrender to it rather than using it to manipulate others to satisfy our desire. When we own it for ourselves and allow it to create through us, it forms a super highway of self-realization.

It forces us to face our unrestrained Shadow and if we can do this with compassion, we have the chance to redeem ourselves. For the truth of this card is that the only grace you will ever know is the grace you give yourself through complete acceptance of the psychotic, satyric part of the self.
